Onex is seeking a Data Scientist to join our growing team and support the firm's Analytics & AI function. Reporting directly to the, Head of Analytics and AI, the successful candidate will support the analytics & AI function with the objective of protecting and enhancing value at Onex. This is a firm-wide team that uses advanced analytics, machine learning, and other statistical methods to help make better investment and operations decisions. The team will focus on data-driven questions that matter to business and can be solved through the application of data analysis and visualization, statistics, computer programming, and machine learning. You will develop insights through alternative datasets and analytical methods to help fill in gaps in Onex understanding of specific assets and markets, as well as help source new investment and partnership opportunities.


  • Drive Data-Driven Decision Making: Play a key role in accelerating a data-driven evolution within Onex and with our operating companies by using advanced analytics to evaluate live private equity deals, work with our portfolio company management teams to drive business value, and work with alternative datasets to curate novel insights
  • Master the Data Lifecycle: Understand and own all steps of the data analysis process, including cleansing dirty and unstructured data, EDA, modeling, visualizing, and presenting findings
  • Innovate Independently: Explore and manage a diverse portfolio of datasets. You'll have the autonomy to discover and cultivate unique perspectives and insights from vast data resources, enhancing our strategic decisions and operational efficiency
  • Lead Cutting-Edge Projects: Design, oversee, and implement a range of machine learning and analytics initiatives from conception to completion. Your projects will address a variety of business challenges, including but not limited to, developing scalable machine learning models, employing alternative data sourcing techniques like web scraping, and crafting dynamic dashboards for real-time insights
  • Address a Broad Spectrum of Business Challenges: Engage in solving diverse business issues by developing robust, production-ready machine learning models, extracting data from alternative sources like web scraping, and creating interactive dashboards to visualize key metrics for our portfolio companies


Professional Characteristics:

  • Experience: 2-4 years in data science or related fields . A keen interest in alternative investments is desirable
  • Education: An advanced degree in a quantitative field (e.g. Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Quantitative Finance, Sciences, Operations Research)
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced skills in programming and querying with Python, SQL, and other object-oriented programming languages
  • Experience with big data distributed tools like Spark and Dask is advantageous
  • Proficiency in dashboarding tools such as PowerBI and Tableau
  • Knowledge of web application development using Streamlit or Flask is beneficial but not mandatory
  • Experience in object-oriented programming and writing production-grade code is an asset
  • Familiarity with web scraping tools including BeautifulSoup, Selenium, and Scrapy is a plus
  • Experience with cloud computing environments, including platforms like Microsoft Azure and AWS is an asset
  • Experience with Generative AI tools and understanding of Large Language Models (LLMs) and their practical applications is a plus
  • Analytical Skills: Strong grasp of data analysis, fundamental machine learning models, and quantitative methods such as Monte Carlo simulations
  • Experience with predictive and explanatory ML models including regression analysis, boosting methodologies, and tree-based models is desirable
  • A robust intuition for analytical methodologies and a drive to tackle novel technical challenges
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment
  • Communication: Excellent ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, both verbally and in writing
  • Passion & Curiosity: A profound passion for applying data science to create business value and a relentless curiosity to uncover insights from data
